Company Finds New Applications for its GPRS Router
Brisbane
based, Braintree Communications Pty Ltd, today announced the release to
reseller channels of its new SMS-capable router – the Axon G4020.
Originally designed as a protocol converter for automatic teller machine
and EFTPOS transactions, the Axon G4020 is also becoming popular with
DSL infrastructure deployers and network managers because of its ability
to be reset or reconfigured by the mobile networks’
short-message-service (SMS).
Mr. Peter Mason, CEO of Braintree Communications said: “We have found
the ability to reconfigure or reset a router via SMS is of great benefit
to organisations like banks and retail chains because of the high cost
of site visits. It can cost between $150 and $220 to get a service
company rep on site just to reset a box.
For as little as $10 for a pre-paid GSM SIM from any of the mobile
network providers, IT managers can now reconfigure or reset the router,
and other devices attached to that router, remotely.”
“A network manager in Australia could reconfigure or boot a router
located anywhere in the world where there is GSM coverage”, said Mr.
Mason.
“The commands are sent via SMS and are only accepted after sender
authentication.”
These commands include updating the access control list, changing
usernames, passwords and GPRS access point names, and rebooting the
router. It can also be programmed to run scripts that connect to other
devices.
The Axon G4020 uses a Coldfire processor running embedded Linux coupled
with a GPRS modem. The hardware and software has been developed by
Braintree over the last 4 years.
As well as routing capability, the Axon G4020 can also convert legacy
protocols like SNA for carriage over IP networks like GPRS and DSL.
